Let me introduce you to wine connoiseur Colin Harkness

A connoisseur is someone with deep, cultivated, expert-level appreciation of a particular subject — not just knowledge, but refined taste, the ability to discern subtle differences, and the confidence to judge quality with authority.

🧭 What makes someone a connoisseur

I met Colin when he came to the studios of OCI in Altea to talk about wine and in the course of our chat Colin explained he had been a football scout for Liverpool and had discovered the talent and prowess of Michael Owen. Our subsequent discussions took place after the radio station had closed down during the recession. You have four podcasts to realise how expert a connoiseur Colin is.

  • Expertise — They’ve studied the field, formally or informally, for years.
  • Discrimination — They can tell the difference between good, great, and exceptional.
  • Taste — Their preferences are shaped by experience, not fashion.
  • Judgment — Others trust their evaluations.
  • Passion — They don’t dabble; they immerse.
